Sampling CDs - Drone Archeology
Each of Drone Archeology's constantly evolving drones are based on original sounds and acoustic palettes and have completely unique characteristics. These tones are the result of computer resynthesis with a series of proprietary computer programs. Each drone is rich yet is completely absent of noise.
Contemporary and original
Contemporary and original in nature and scope, Drone Archeology is a powerful tool in the hands of the contemporary and avant garde composer/musician, as well as being an invaluable resource for film composers creating soundtracks, soundbeds and sound design. Used as foundation material, they can be processed and transformed in any number of ways to assist you in developing your own particular sound.
Praise for Drone Archeology
" In a market crowded with me-too jungle and hip-hop CDs, sound developer Ernest Cholakis has come up with something as original as it is useful: a whole CD of electronic drone tones. .. Ambient artists will be in hog heaven, and the drones should work well for those ominous breaks in industrial rock, too - or even in acid and drum 'n' bass. If I could give a soundware product an 11 for Documentation, this CD would win it! "
- Jim Aikin, Keyboard (USA)
Among the many hip sample CDs in today's market, there lurks an occasional gem that really excites me. Drone Archeology ...My jaw dropped to the floor when I saw the 111-page booklet and accompanying session worksheets included with the disc. I wanted to hug the producers. In the booklet, you get incredibly detailed explanations of every aspect of the the drones. ... I just loved this disk. CD producers take note; this is how to do it right. Eminently musical and useful, presented with admirable forethought and enough detailed information to sate even the most sophisticated users, Drone Archeology is a hit. A big high five to Ernest Cholakis and Numerical Sound.
- Jeff Obee, Electronic Musican
There is a sort of delicate sophistication to much of the material on show here and producer Ernest Cholakis is clearly in touch with his 'new age' side. Stripping out all the trappings of fluffy and over-produced ambient sound design of the past few years Drone Archeology in some ways goes back to the very basic building blocks of sound itself, offering synth pads consisting only of pure tones and sparse harmonics, creating some of the most desolate yet usable soundscapes of recent years. Touched upon briefly by Eric Persing in Distorted Reality these elongated meditations on sound would be perfect for the soundtrack writer looking for something a bit different for that next BBC documentary all about the Antarctic.

99 Unique Tones
Drone Archeology offers the musician and/or composer a selection of 99 completely unique tones that are steady in pitch but have constant movement so that they are never the same from one moment to the next. Every drone is between 32 and 64 seconds of original material with no built in loops.
Easier Extraction and Looping
Drone Archaeology is the first audio CD to include a listing of the original stereo loop points. This gives the user CD ROM features in an audio CD platform. The detailed information on how to find the loop points means that Mac and PC users can extract and loop the drones from the same CD. Details in the manual enables a maximization of the amount of audio on Drone Archeology without the inevitable loss of space that a mixed mode CD ROM would have.
Unprecedented documentation
As well there is a 114 page manual which is included free with every CD contains a new harmonic classification system, insight into the structure of these complex tones, and other useful technical information.
Film Composers
In order to aid multimedia and film production people the drones have been classified into seven categories. These are; Nature, Science, Drama, Industry, Voice, Bell and Drones.
The drones were designed to have "focused spectrums". In other words to occupy a measured amount of the sonic space in the stereo field. Even though they are extremely rich and evocative tones, they do not dominate or overpower the overall sound by leaving little room for any other group of sound to co-exist.Using any of these drones in dense sonic passages will not obscure the rest of sonic detail present.
GigaSampler Reveals the Power of Each Drone
Because the loop lengths are 30 to 60 second long transposing a Drone Archeology drone up 2 octaves still leaves a loop with 7-15 second loop lengths ! The timbre of each drone tone changes in unique and rich ways as one uses the GigaSampler to transform the original pitch up and down two or more octaves.
Playing keyboard harmony with a drone tone that contain complex slow moving undulations, combined with extremely long loop lenghts generate tones that keep evolving in ways that are very different from what is heard in a single drone tone.
