New Orleans: The Delta Grooves

Numerical Sound is pleased to announce the release of New Orleans; The Delta Grooves, a 2-CD sampling set that showcases New Orleans funk rhythms. Inspired by the exception acoustic performances of New Orlean's musicians Robin D. Rorie and Dennis Shaikewitz, Ernest Cholakis of Numerical Sound has produced a sampling package that offers several exceptional features available to users for the first time.

The first most notable feature is Electro-Acoustic Modeling (E.A.M.), a cousin to Cholakis' DNA Groove Templates, which makes drum loops available for the first time that have been actually modeled on a human performance - in this case the drummer Dennis Shaikewitz. Several very interesting loops have been broken down into compartmentalized and user friendly elements. This opens up a new world of possibilities for the user who is given access to the "skeletal" bones of the rhythms and allowed to manipulate the elements of musical phrases.

This offers an entirely new level of flexibility, accuracy and clarity. For example, all the kick, snare, and tom toms samples have 32 velocity levels and the hi hat and ride cymbal have 8 velocity levels. Each track has a partial set of the appropriate drum samples in the upper register of the each keyboard patch. The user can play along in real time with either the acoustic or electo-acoustic loops which are triggered from the lower register the same keyboard patch.

The second notable feature of this set is its size and comprehensiveness. New Orleans; The Delta Grooves contains over 1.3 Gigabytes of sampling material. This package gives the user 250 acoustic loops all between 4-8 bars in length at tempo's ranging from 72-120 BPM of drums, bass & drums, bass, guitar & percussion loops. Also included are 485 E.A.M. loops, 1336 drum samples in either 8 or 32 velocity levels and 170 bass riffs, slides, harmonics as well as 210 perfectly looped individual electro-acoustic Fender bass tones organized in 6 velocity levels.

The third equally important feature of this set is its exceptional sound quality. Each E.A.M. loop has absolutely No Room Ambience. Each loop's sound quality is beyond the capabilities of any real world microphone in terms of signal to noise ratio.

Recorded in New Orleans the overall sound is an acoustic sampling CD that is clean, warm and transparent.

Price: $99 US for Audio Version, $150 US for Mac and PC versions, GigaSampler CD Rom Versions $199 US

The Musician who performed on the New Orleans; The Delta Grooves

Dennis (Shake) Shaikewitz studied with Ellis Marsalis and has played with Wynton and Bradford Marsalis. Shaikewitz, a native of New Orleans, studied at NOCCA (New Orleans Center for Creative Arts) and is a working musician who has played and performed live for over 20 years.

Robin D. Rorie is a producer and session player who plays bass and various other percussion instruments. He lives just outside of New Orleans and has been groovin on the scene for over 13 years.

Recorded in New Orleans the overall sound is an acoustic sampling CD that is clean, warm and transparent.

Details on Electro-Acoustic Modeling

All the loops that have the E.A.M. initials in the instrument description column are sythesized rhythms based on a new process developed by Ernest Cholakis called "Electro-Acoustic Modeling".

Used to create the solo kick, snare, hi hat and ride loops that are based on the "acoustic properties" of real world instruments but are actually generated using computer modeling. All the E.A.M. rhythms are derived from the rhythms that Dennis played. The number in the groove column lists the acoustic drum that the rhythm was extracted from.

An Electro-Acoustic Modeling (E.A.M.) Kick Drum Groove

An Electro-Acoustic Modeling (E.A.M.) Snare Drum Groove

Two key acoustic properties of drums have been emulated during this process. One is the change in timbre that occurs with dynamics in a real world performance and the second is that subtle but constant change in timbre that occurs because no two acoustic events ever contain the exact same timbre.

* One practical result of this process is that the actual sound quality of each of these loops is beyond the capabilities of any real world microphone in terms of signal to noise ratio and isolation or real world acoustic space. Each E.A.M. loop has absolutely no room ambience.

* All the E.A.M. Kick, Snare, Hi Hat and Ride rhythms are based on the the same group of drum samples, a couple of which are available in the upper register of the keyboard allowing them to be played simultaneously with the lower register of loops. This was done so that one can add ornamentation or creatively augment E.A.M. loops conveniently in real time.

Instead of mapping the samples in the conventional vertical manner with the a new sample every 4 midi velocity levels (1-4 Drum samples #1, 5-8 drum sample #2 ... 125-127 drum sample #32) all the samples in track 38-72 are mapped chromatically across the keyboard from F3 to C6. Track 37 has most of its drum samples mapped in a conventional 8 layer approach.

A 32 layer snare drum mapped out across the keyboard (F3-C6 ) 918k in GigaSampler Format

This nonstandard instrument mapping is used which extends timbral possibilities and gives a keyboard player a range of expression that approaches what a drummer can do. The sample at F3 contains the timbre of a drum sample played -70db and the sample at C6 is the loudest sample played at -0db level. Instead of having the F3 and all the other samples except C6 scaled to lower amplitude levels they are all at -0db containing a full 96db S/N ratio (16 bits resolution). If your were creating a snare performance with a traditional "dynamic" properties one has the option or adjusting the sequence so that a lower the pitch sample is always softer (lower midi velocity) than a higher pitch sample. Flams and buzz rolls sound more realistic with this type of patch than a conventional vertical approach (track 37). This was done to give the user more creative options.

* The signal to noise ratio of samples in tracks 38-72 are unachievable using any microphone. For example a mic with a 10db ENL (Equivalent noise level) noise floor and the sound is played at 60 db SPL the resulting recording has a maximum S/N ratio of 50db. With this new technology a real drum sample played at 40db SPL can be modeled to have a 96db S/N noise floor. This offers the contemporary composer and/or musician 32 levels of drum samples (snare/Kick/HiHat/TomTom) covering over 70db dynamic range all with a S/N ratio of 96 db !

Drone Archeology

Keyboard (USA)

In a market crowded with me-too jungle and hip-hop CDs, sound developer Ernest Cholakis has come up with something as original as it is useful: a whole CD of electronic drone tones. .. Ambient artists will be in hog heaven, and the drones should work well for those ominous breaks in industrial rock, too - or even in acid and drum 'n' bass. If I could give a soundware product an 11 for Documentation, this CD would win it! ..."An inspiring collection," Ernie concluded. "I found myself unable to stop singing or playing along with the drones." JIM AIKIN

Electronic Musican

Among the many hip sample CDs in today's market, there lurks an occasional gem that really excites me. Drone Archeology ...My jaw dropped to the floor when I saw the 111-page booklet and accompanying session worksheets included with the disc. I wanted to hug the producers. In the booklet, you get incredibly detailed explanations of every aspect of the the drones. ... I just loved this disk. CD producers take note; this is how to do it right. Eminently musical and useful, presented with admirable forethought and enough detailed information to sate even the most sophisticated users, Drone Archeology is a hit. A big high five to Ernest Cholakis and Numerical Sound. JEFF OBEE

Sound on Sound (UK)

There is a sort of delicate sophistication to much of the material on show here and producer Ernest Cholakis is clearly in touch with his 'new age' side. Stripping out all the trappings of fluffy and over-produced ambient sound design of the past few years Drone Archeology in some ways goes back to the very basic building blocks of sound itself, offering synth pads consisting only of pure tones and sparse harmonics, creating some of the most desolate yet usable soundscapes of recent years. Touched upon briefly by Eric Persing in Distorted Reality these elongated meditations on sound would be perfect for the soundtrack writer looking for something a bit different for that next BBC documentary all about the Antarctic.

Drone Archeology

Each of Drone Archeology's constantly evolving drones are based on original sounds and acoustic palettes and have completely unique characteristics. These tones are the result of computer resynthesis with a series of proprietary computer programs. Each drone is rich yet is completely absent of noise.

Contemporary and original in nature and scope, Drone Archeology is a powerful tool in the hands of the contemporary and avant garde composer/musician, as well as being an invaluable resource for film composers creating soundtracks, soundbeds and sound design. Used as foundation material, they can be processed and transformed in any number of ways to assist you in developing your own particular sound.

Drone Archeology offers the musician and/or composer a selection of 99 completely unique tones that are steady in pitch but have constant movement so that they are never the same from one moment to the next. Every drone is between 32 and 64 seconds of original material with no built in loops.

Drone Archaeology is the first audio CD to include a listing of the original stereo loop points. This gives the user CD ROM features in an audio CD platform. The detailed information on how to find the loop points means that Mac and PC users can extract and loop the drones from the same CD. Details in the manual enables a maximization of the amount of audio on Drone Archeology without the inevitable loss of space that a mixed mode CD ROM would have.

As well there is a 114 page manual which is included free with every CD contains a new harmonic classification system, insight into the structure of these complex tones, and other useful technical information.

Film Composers

In order to aid multimedia and film production people the drones have been classified into seven categories. These are; Nature, Science, Drama, Industry, Voice, Bell and Drones.

The drones were designed to have "focused spectrums". In other words to occupy a measured amount of the sonic space in the stereo field. Even though they are extremely rich and evocative tones, they do not dominate or overpower the overall sound by leaving little room for any other group of sound to co-exist.Using any of these drones in dense sonic passages will not obscure the rest of sonic detail present.

GigaSampler Reveals the Power of Each Drone in Drone Archeology

Because the loop lengths are 30 to 60 second long transposing a Drone Archeology drone up 2 octaves still leaves a loop with 7-15 second loop lengths ! The timbre of each drone tone changes in unique and rich ways as one uses the GigaSampler to transform the original pitch up and down two or more octaves.

Playing keyboard harmony with a drone tone that contain complex slow moving undulations, combined with extremely long loop lenghts generate tones that keep evolving in ways that are very different from what is heard in a single drone tone.

Drone Archeology Pitch Information for GigaSampler CD Rom Format

Most of the drone tones on these two CD Rom formats have the unity pitch raised two octaves. For example an GigaSampler will not playback a Drone tone at the pitch listed in the user manual as G1 (49Hz) when midi note G1 (31) is triggered by a keyboard or midi sequencer. The original pitch will be heard when midi note G3 (C4=middle C=60) is triggered. The reason for this was so that drone tones could playback much lower pitches than the original pitch without resorting to extremely low midi notes. The only exception to this procedure were the following tracks

Track 13 Tropical Moisture A3=unity up 3 octaves

Track 21 Tropical Rainforest A3=unity up 3 octaves

Track 27 Human Alienation C5=unity up 1 octave

Track 35 Massive Fusion Reaction E3=unity up 3 octaves

Track 43 Ultra High Temperatures C5=unity up 1 octave

Track 56 Wasteland E3=unity up 3 octaves

Percussion Wall

Comments

I wish I had better words for it, but...Soulful, intuitive, and heart-pounding...This CD explores percussive passion at every level. These are the best 'alternative' percussion sounds I've ever heard. The CD seamlessly transitions from techno to tribal withboth depth and intricacy. Funk is blended with jungle, and then crafted to sound like it was produced 100 years into the future. Mr. Gail, you've taken digital audio to a realm that astounds me...cyber-tribal seems to be the only way to describe it I don't think my words can adequately describe the wizardry that l hear coming from your work - but to my ears - I think it's phenomenal!

Nathan Marks
Sonic Foundry's Acid Development Team

This is the first Sampling CD to offer Afro Techno Ritual Rhythms with drums and percussion as its foundation.

Some Highlights of Percussion Wall

Percussion Wall offers a wide range sounds, and arrangements with rhythmic pulse divisions (2,3,4,6,8 and quarter note triplets - 3 against 2). All the 559 loops on Percussion Wall are organized into 8 tempos 160, 140, 130, 120, 118, 110, 100 and 80 beats per minute.

Percussion Wall is the first drum loop audio CD which includes a listing of the original stereo loop points. This gives the user CD ROM features in an audio CD platform.

Percussion Wall's external User's Manual is a 27 page resource which comes with every purchase of this CD. Important data is listed for each loop which includes sound and music properties. The original loop points can be easily obtained with the information listed in this manual.

Percussion Wall is an extremely versatile sampling CD because it contains compete larger than life rhythm loops that are production ready, also background or rhythms textures that can mix in with other existing music, as well as sonic construction material for creating entirely new loops.

Electronic Drummer Dick Gail performed and created a series of drum loops based on African/Jazz rhythm concepts but used contemporary percussion samples for his sound source. His inspiration for these rhythms are the songs from the tribes of the Yoruba, the Bambala, the Zingili the Mahafaly, the Baya, the Watutsi, and the Badouma, and the work of the great BeBop drummers, such as Elvin Jones, Max Roach, Art Blakey and Philly Joe Jones. Dick Gail has played with Albert Ayler, Pat Martino, Charles Earland, Groove Holmes, and Dakota Staton to name just a few. He also owns a patent for tuning drums by the use of air pressure and for the past ten years has been the in house artist for the speaker company Cerwin-Vega.

Ernest Cholakis took these loops and processed and transformed some of these loops into what Cholakis calls Electro-Acoustic transformations.

Electro-Acoustic Transformation defines a class of sound processes Ernest Cholakis developed to dramatically alter and transform percussion loops in unique ways that are commercially unavailable. The transformed loops on this CD were designed to expand the range of sonic and musical creative potential for the user. The results are rhythm building blocks which can be manipulated by any musician or sound designer to create entirely new and different sounding loops from those heard on this CD. And lastly, in the process of separating the musical elements much work was done to enhance the clarity of many of the very complex rhythms as well as having expanded and extended the timbre of the original performances.

Percussion Wall Patch Information for GigaSampler Format

Percussion Wall sampling CD has percussion loops that contain many layers of very complex processing. As any seasoned sound designer knows the more processing a loop has the harder it is to create a seamless loop point. The GigaSampler format gives you all 559 loops with ultra smooth sounding loop points !

Each audio track on this sampling CD Percussion Wall has between 6 to13 drum loops per track. The GigaSampler format has a ".Gig" file for each of these tracks (60 in total). All loops in each track are mapped out the same way: a new loop per semitone starting at middle C (C4=midi note 60=261Hz). For example, the first loop of a track is mapped on to note C4, the next loop on C#4, the third on D4 and so forth. All the loops in a track have the same tempo so there is no need for individual time compression/expansion. Pitch shifting the entire patch will move the tempo of all the loops to the same tempo.

Clyde Stubblefield : The Funky Drummer Remastered

Press Comments

Sound on Sound UK gave it ****1/2 (4 1/2 out of 5), Keyboard Magazine USA **** (4 out of 4) "This is the definitive funky drum disc to date.". Future Music UK states "... you want to freshen your music and give your sampler a tastes of loops from the funkmaster, then this is an investment. The templates are superbly programmed..." and ".The aim of the templates is to put back into your music the real feel that an itchy quantization finger so often destroys".

The CD now contains 379 loops in the Studio Quality mix and the same loops 379 in a bass heavy Hip Hop/Club mix for a total of 758 loops. A great performance by one of the world's great Old School Drummers

Clyde Stubblefield is the most sampled drummer in the world. When he played with James Brown he lay down many classic drum tracks that are R&B classics such as Cold Sweat, I Got The Feelin', Mother Popcorn, Give It Up Or Turn It Loose and Funky Drummer, Say It Loud (I'm Black and I'm Proud). Cold Sweat and Funky Drummer were voted two of the top 50 grooves of the 20th century by Modern Drummer.

For each loop there is a MIDI File and a set of DNA Groove Templates.Clyde plays a wide range of styles and tempos (70 to 140 bpm) but regardless of what he plays, it's always funky.

The Funky Drummer audio CD also ships with a Mac/PC CD Rom with the MIDI Files and DNA Grooves for each loops that are derived from Clyde Stubblefields's great acoustic performance.

BERNARD PURDIE - Rhythm Central Turbo Version

The number one drummer in the world for the past 30 years. Get Purdie's legendary feel and style in one comprehensive product. 705 loops, 400 MIDI files and 400 sets of DNA Groove Templates. Tempos range from 60 to 120 bpm and needless to say every note is played with the confidence and power that comes from a life time playing with the foremost artists in the world.

Bernard Purdie has recorded albums with Aretha Franklin, Paul Simon,The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Steely Dan, Jeff Beck, Frank Sinatra,Ray Charles, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Miles Davis, Isacc Hayes, Bob Marley and over 4000 others. He is by far the most recorded drummer in history.

We took one of the world's most recorded drummers and accurately extracted his feel from an acoustic recording session. The advantage of this is that you have access to extremely high quality midi files that accurately capture the groove of a world class drummer. Purdie did not play on drum pads to generate these midi files because they don't translate the subtle timing and feel that real drum heads give.

Three professional Remix artists took these midi files and substituted their own "drum samples" and audio production techniques. This gives you a variety of contemporary drum loops. The drum samples used for each drum loop are included at the end of the audio CD and are also on the CD Rom in Aiff and Wave format for both Mac and PC users.

The DNA groove Templates included on the CD Rom contain Bernard Purdie's feel from straight ahead, laid back, driving to shuffling. These "proven" feels can be used in your original midi sequences to humanize your melodic/percussion rhythm sections.

A 24 Page User's manual is included with a spreadsheet style listing of the loop points for all the drum loops on this CD. This way both Mac and PC users can listen to the loop then quickly extract and perfectly loop any drum loop on this CD.

The Turbo Edition includes a CD Rom with the DNA Groove Templates, Midi Files, Drum Samples in both Mac and PC format.

This Information is for the GigaStudio Users Forum at the Northern Sounds Web Site

Let me state clearly that I think Gigasampler is an amazing software sampler that has changed sampling for the better. On some bass slide tones that are not played at the original unity note some aliasing is present. It is a very minor problem however I think others in the GigaSampler community should be aware of this.

When working with GigaSamper on the New Orleans; The Delta Grooves sampling CD Rom I noticed that some aliasing was present on deep bass slide tones when the sample was triggered at a pitch other than the original unity note (in this case the tone was transposed up 1 semitone).

You can hear the original bass tone in wav format bassorig.wav and the GigaStudio version transposed up one semitone (16 bit digital output) bassdgig.wav The aliasing part of the sound can be heard without any of the original bass tone (2KHz High Pass Filter) in bassdgia.wavThe four graphs below are the audio spectrums of these tones. The top two are the audio spectrum of the original tone bassorig.wav in linear and exponential frequency representation . The bottom two graphs are the spectrums of the bassdgig.wav which contains the aliasing tones. Note that they are the spikes 70db down and in the frequency range of between 2000-11000Hz.

A GigaSampler patch giga50hz.gig contains a looped 50Hz tone that has a slow frequency modulation and a high pass filter to reduce the 50Hz tone so that one can easily hear the aliasing in the treble part of the sound (you will hear a "drizzle" sound).

The work around solution was to include a low pass bass filter in the GigaSampler patch. What I would like to see is a option for choosing a better interpolating algorithm - this might be at the expense of more voices but I think it is worth it. What do other users at this forum think ?
