What is SONIC TRACE?

Numerical Sound Studios has developed a copy protection system for all Sampling CD companies, Music Companies and Multimedia companies who want to protect and trace the use of their products in the marketplace.

It is called SONIC TRACE Piracy Detection.

Sonic Trace Piracy Detection marks the audio with a specific (inaudible) serial number. The Sonic Trace detection service is able to detect the original serial number from a music passage, drum loop or even an individual hi hat sample that is being used in a new work. The detection will work even if the passage has been resampled in the analog domain. The Sonic Trace Piracy Detection label on your CD warning of an inaudible signal will in itself deter a certain percentage of pirates from illegally using these encoded CD's. If we assume that 10 to 1 piracy rate and if only 1 out of 10 pirates purchase the CD rather than copying it after reading about SONIC TRACE Piracy Detection on the CD could double your sales.

Why Numerical Sound developed SONIC TRACE Piracy Detection.

As a Producer of sampling CD's and music software at WC Music Research. In 1992 we developed DNA Groove Templates and from 1993-1996 released 19 Sampling CD and DNA Groove Template Products on the Mac, Atari and PC platforms.

Our technology has been incorporated by all the major midi sequencing competitors -Mark of the Unicorn's Performer, Cakewalk Music Software's Cakewalk, Steinberg's Cubase, Opcode's Vision, and Emagic's Logic. Over the past year Yamaha has implemented the groove template technology and Roland incorporated some of our Drum loops in their sampler the MS-1.

Our DNA groove templates all fit on a floppy and until now have not been copy protected. Because these groove templates take several months of man hours and can be illegally pirated by a user in 2 minutes we understand the problem that other sampling companies are going through. As CD Recorders drop in price, all of us will face further loss of revenue from piracy.

How SONIC TRACE SONIC TRACE Piracy Detection Works

The SONIC TRACE Piracy Detection marks the audio with a specific (inaudible) serial number. The Sonic Trace detection service is able to detect the original serial number from a music passage, drum loop or even an individual hi hat sample that is being used in a new work. The detection will work even if the passage has been resampled in the analog domain.

SONIC TRACE Piracy Detection Trademark labels are available for products marked by Sonic Trace only and will be an important identification mark for ensuring musicians and the broader public are aware that the product has a security system in place.

Once a CD is commercially released any company who has SONIC TRACE Piracy Detection marked on their product and is interested in verifying legitimate or illegal use of that CD material, need only submit individual samples or musical passages of concern to Numerical Sound for immediate analytical verification.

Why there is no Software Encoder Decoder Package

A software encoder decoder package offers no long term security and a serial number elimination program could become available on the internet. A pirate would only have to input some special test tones through the encoder and then analyze the results and build a signal processing program to defeat the encoding.

Numerical Sound Studios has several encoding algorithms and can alter the encoding procedure which provides the most and only reliable long term security.

What the SONIC TRACE Piracy Detection Does

Numerical Sound Studios has worked out a complex numerical formulae that secures the highest level of safeguard from piracy available. This safeguard applies to both digital signals and resampled analog signals. This level of security is not possible in a prepackaged software. The SONIC TRACE Piracy Detection offers a stress-free and software-free service that is an easy and straight forward system for copyright protection.

There is only financial gain with SONIC TRACE Piracy Detection

The SONIC TRACE Piracy Detection label on your CD warning of an inaudible signal will in itself deter a certain percentage of pirates from illegally using these encoded CD's. If we assume that 10 to 1 piracy rate and if only 1 out of 10 pirates purchase the CD rather than copying it after reading about SONIC TRACE Piracy Detection on the CD then you will double your sales !

We have spoken to several of our distributors and competitors for an estimate of the level of piracy. The range of varies from 2 to 1 illegal copies for every legitimate copy sold to 20 to 1 for popular titles. 2 to 1 is very conservative and 50 to 1 is on the high side, however music software piracy is higher than computer software. Almost all the major sequencer companies that offer professional midi sequencing have copy protection. Given this a reasonable estimate of the piracy ratio is 10 to 1.

How to Purchase SONIC TRACE Piracy Detection

To encode a CD a company should send the final mastered version of their CD product to Numerical Sound Studios for serial number identification. This service is available for a one time only charge of $1300.00 US.

The first 5 samples submitted to Numerical Sound for serial number identification will be free of charge. If any subsequent verification are requested there is a minimal charge starting at $15.00 US for a simple sample.
