Demo Notes
All processed demos created entirely by
using FORTI and/or SERTI with the Vienna Suite Convolution Plugin (and
the
VSL Limiter already included in the Vienna Suite).
The limiter was used on some tracks only to
quickly adapt output level, not for coloration.
No other plug-ins (either 3rd party or
VSL) were used unless specifically indicated.
FORTI used to create a different timbre for VSL 2nd violins
Here are 2 video demos using FORTI (both less than 1 minute long) that
also
includes the settings to transform the sound of the 1st violins into a
2nd violin timbre. The 2nd violins
should have a slightly different tone than the first violins. What is
interesting is that the mixing of the wet and dry signals (with no
reverb added) does not add a flanging component to the sound which is
why this works musically. One video uses the VSL Orchestral Violins and
the
2nd video includes Appassionata violins.
Another option for distinguishing the 1st and 2nd violins is to use the
setting shown in the videos but mute the dry level so that only the wet
level is heard. This is the FilmEq sound which is fuller and warmer
tone that works well for harmony parts.
This process can also be applied to LASS violins or any other string
libraries.

Using
FORTI & SERTI to add warmth to LASS
Numerical Sound Reverb and Timbral Impulses from FORTI and SERTI brings
warmth of LASS to a new level. This string demo by James Semple was
processed with FORTI & SERTI and Vienna Suite (Convolution Reverb
& Limiter were used). The processing was done in Logic 9 - here is
a link to a pdf with details on the mixing with screen shots of the
plugin settings used

The Film Eq Timbral Impulse (from FORTI) adds warmth and openness to
the sound by emphasizing the harmonics over the bowing noise as well as
adding scale consistency to each string instrument. In effective making
a close mic'ed recording sound like the mic's recorded the strings
farther back in the hall - but still dry sonically.
Each Film Eq uses Orch2 Timbral Impulses which can be applied to any
non-VSL string library. While all the Film Eq’s Timbral Impulses can be
applied to non-VSL libraries - the FORTI Film EQ's are optimized
precisely and specifically for each of the VSL String Libraries.
A parametric notch at 93Hz was applied to all examples to reduce the
resonance slightly.
This processing (all except the notch at 93Hz) is unique and cannot be
accurately duplicated by any other plugin in the marketplace.

Enhancement
Timbral Impulse
As you can hear in example 3 without the loss of subtle nuance, a
common challenge for sampled orchestrations, the SERTI bass enhancement
process adds a solidity and substance. SERTI preserves clarity, adds
warmth which enhances the expressiveness and makes it a practical
option for preserving the qualities of a finely tuned arrangement.
I would recommend listening on headphones the examples in full in the
order listed then bring all three into a sound editor and play the same
section (2-4 seconds max) on all three exampled in order to hear the
timbal differences.
Hear is a link to a movie that plays several short excerpts from the
James Semple piece "The Last Hope". First the original followed by the
FORTI & SERTI processed version in quick alternating succession.
The should make it easier to clearly hear the sonic differences. The
film is under 1 minute in length
